Slow And Steady Weight Loss

If you’re not on a diet, but a “way of life change in eating”, take it slowly.  Just about everybody at one time or another has gone the route of giving up most of your favorite foods to lose a few pounds.  Some of the “landmines” to giving up too much is that you’ll find the change nearly impossible to maintain.iStock_000001238258XSmall

Believe me, most of us have been there.  In short, changing  everything about the way you eat will set you up for failure, so you won’t age gracefully.  You’ll be short tempered, feel punished for a few extra pounds and before long,  you have a bad attitude.  It comes with the territory.

So where do you start?  Don’t eat the same thing every day.  If you normally eat chips with your sandwich, skip the chips and eat a few slices of cucumber.  Just  change a couple of things that would be a problem at each meal.  Don’t try and change everything.  Having a variety of foods rather than just a handful of choices will make it easier to eliminate the unhealthy ones.

Don’t deprive yourself of everything you enjoy.  If you baked a chocolate pie for company and that’s your favorite, eat just a very small piece instead of second helpings.  Food is to be enjoyed.  Your quest is for the long run, not losing a large number of pounds by next week.  If you don’t like vegetables or don’t like to eat raw foods, juice the veggies or put them in a blender on high for about a minute and drink them.  You might be pleasantly surprised at how delicious they are.  Making achievable goals will prove to be more successful if you’re realistic.

If you have setbacks, go right back to the same plan you started.  Don’t give up,  just move on from there.  Your goal, after all, is to become a healthier person and to live younger longer.  When you accomplish that, the pounds will come off automatically.

Whether you need to lose ten or fifty pounds, it’s the process that matters.  You may find you don’t miss that latte’ every afternoon.  Just have it once every week or so.  Let your failures teach you as much as your successes.  Have your favorites in moderation, enjoy yourself and become the healthy, happy person you deserve to be.
